IS FIRST CLASS CRICKET ON THE WAY OUT?

Asks DAVID JACK

In 10 years' time-perhaps sooner-cricket will no longer be the leading summer sport in England.

It survives now, in the face of competition from athletics, tennis, swimming and golf, only because, at an age when they are too young to know any better, children have cricket thrust upon them at school.

Not until they reach the age of discrimination do those children tumble to the fact that they have been hoodwinked; not until they go out into the world-or join a tennis club-do they discover that, for years, they have been assimilating, quite ridiculously, the most overrated sport in the world.
