rumours

Meanwhile, General Nathan Twining said it would take about a year to "gear up" for faster B-52 jet bomber production even with the extra funds proposed by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

General Twining, Air Force Chief of Staff, made the statement when asked by a reporter to comment on the Committee's action yesterday adding $1,160,000,000 to the administration's defence budget for Air Force use.

The Committee specifically earmarked $800 million of the increase for procuring modern warplanes such as the B-52,

Senator Styles Bridges, leading Republican member of the Committee, introduced an amendment today to substitute a $600 million increase for the $1,160 million. He had several Democratic and Republican co-sponsors.

The amendment would include $80 million for opera- tions and maintenance and $20 million for personnel.
