HE DOESN'T TALK MUCH ABOUT ARCHIE, BUT- POMPEY WILL TALK ABOUT GREYHOUNDS FOR HOURS
By HARRY CARPENTER
Devizes.
Two men jog through the narrow streets of this Wiltshire market town soon after sun-up. One is Yolande Pompey, sepia-skinned Trinidad cruiserweight preparing for his world title fight with Champion Archie Moore at Harringay on June 5. The other is jockey Tommy Gosling, who lives in Devizes Castle. The two have struck up a firm friendship and are training together.
This is, of course racing country, with the Beckhampton, Marlborough, Ogbourne, and Manton stables nearby.
May 17 took Pompey to Bath races. Tommy rode two winners, 6-1 and 8-1. Said Pompey, in his light, lilting voice: "Man, I never backed either of them. What do you know about that?"

CO-STARRING WITH BOB HOPE
KATHARINE HEPBURN IS A SOVIET AVIATRIX IN HER NEXT FILM
By HENRY GRIS
The British saw nothing unusual in the teaming of London-born Bob Hope with Connecticut-bred Katharine Hepburn for a film comedy, "The Iron Petticoat." But to Hollywood the Hepburn-Hope combination coming in the wake of the Hepburn-Rossano Brazzi romantic duo in a previous film is slightly shocking.
Will it work? It seems Katie stands to lose the most from a flop, and Bob stands to gain the most from a success,

INTERNATIONAL
"The
TROUBLE
Iron Petticont." patterned after the Greta Garbo starrer "Ninotchka," actually 1s more of a Katharine Hepburn vehicle than one recognises at first glance.
It deals with a Soviet woman flier, Capt. Vinka Kovelenko of the Red At Force, who, in a fit of wounded female pride, fles over to the American side in West Germany,
She finds herself the object of a campaign to win her over to Western philosophy. Hope 1
an intelligence officer who falls for her.
"Kalle,"
Thomas said. "almply took over. We found ourselves following in her lead and trying to match her artistry oa best we could,"
The same, it seems, applied to Hope who, according to Co- actors, emerged as a new and bellevable personality rather than Hope doing Hope,
The Hepburn-Hope vehicle had been in preparation so long, Russia's change of polley Jast summer caused a frantic rewrite of the story's ending. But the International situation remains fuld and Box worries constantly that another definite shift might make the present ending dated before the picture is released.
In which case it would have to be redone. But how?
DO-OR-DIE
When, on the eve of a New Year, Hollywood signed up two actresses who happened to be 6,000 miles and worlds apart to star in some of the 1950 pro- ductions, it was merely follow- ing the zigzag pattern of a new all-out effort.
The two stars represtat op-
extremes in Hollywood's calculated risks for a year al-
labelled by some as do-or-die period.
