Jordan's Choice
THE brief communique at
Tthe clums of the "sum-
mit" meeting of the leaders of Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia disclosed little
about the deliberations, but it did mention that full agreement had been reach- ed on the question of ald for Jordan. The "agree- | ment" however is subject to discount. Nothing has transpired since King Hussein dismissed General Glubb to indicate that Jordan is proparing tu abrogate her treaty with Britain and join the tripic Arab allance,
It is not surprising that Jordan should hesitate to sever her long-standing ties with Britain. She has much to ono by A doing, and very little chance of having the forfeited benefits made good by the Arah states. The Anglo-Jordan Treaty of Alliance is very mitch more than mutual defence pact, and it in well to study some of ita provisions.

TRADE EMBARGO WARNING
HK Bank Chairman's Annual Report 'COLONY MAY NEVER REGAIN LOST TRADE'
Plea To Ease The Ban-Quickly
The Chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, the Hon. Cedric Blaker said today if no substantial relaxa- tion in the trade embargo came soon there was a danger that the trade that Hongkong had lost to China may never be regained.
He said this in the statement issued to shareholders at the annual meeting of the Bank.
The Sino-British Trade Committee had recently been told by the Chinese Government that they saw no object in further visits until there was a considerable relaxation of the embargo, Mr Blaker said.
... we will welcome the day
"We make no secret of the fact that.
it is abolished, but as total abolition cannot be quickly brought about we are contenting ourselves for the time being with advocating the reduction of the Chinese embargo list to make it similar to the Russian list," he said.

London, Mar, 15.
The British government said tonight it could give "no assurance whatever" that Archbishop Makarios, exiled leader of the Cyprus union-with- Greece movement, would be allowed to return to Cyprus even if violence ceased.
Lord Munster, minister without portfolio, told the House of Lords this in reply to suggestions by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England.,
Dr. Fleher, who said the arrest and deportation of the archbishop had been received by Christian opinion in Britain and elsewhere with "great perplexity and distress," had made a dramatic plea to the government to take immediate steps to bring about peace on the island,
