The Government has promised a full scale investigation into the running of local chiefdoms in Sierra Leone early in 1956 following recent anti-tax demonstrations which culminated in riots and a number of deaths.

In this enquiry, the Government is faced with two main problems. The first concerns the fact that apparently the chiefs have lost touch with their people and the second is how to stamp out the petty bribery and corruption which is rife among the tax assessors, collectors and petty officials in any chiefdom,
