ADVENT

In their effort to focus atten- tion on the true meaning of Christmas, many Pro- testant churches have re- cently been re-discovering the Advent season, long observed by Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans and other denominations.

Advent,

which means "coming," is the four- week period preceding Christmas. It is set aside

on

the church liturgical calendar for prayer and thanksgiving for Christ's coming into the world at Christmas. The 1955 advent season begun on November 27.

MIDNIGHT SERVICES

The National Council of Churches has been quietly encouraging Protestant denominations to develop more fully the possibilities for worship during such traditional seasons of the church calendar as advent and lent.

This year a number of Pro- testant churches are hold- ing special week-day ser- vices during Advent, while others are reviving in their Sunday schools the Mediaeval custom of children the teaching

Christmas story through the symbolism of Advent wreaths and Advent calendars.

The practice of holding mid- night services on Christ- mas Eve also is becoming widespread, even among tho so-called "non- liturgical" Protestant donominations which do not observe Advent. The campaign has not been confined to church activi- ties, however.

For several years, Dr Jesse

Bader of the National

of Council

Churches' Department of Evangelism has waged से personal crusade to get greeting card manufacturers to put more "appropriate" plc- tures and sentiments on Christmas cards. The re- sults can be seen in the 1955 lines now on sale.
