Empire Standard Continues To Improve In Distance Runs;
Poor Year In Field Events
The British Commonwealth and Empire year in track and field athletics still has to see the second half of the Southern Hemisphere sea- son and there are one or two major meetings to come in the United King- dom, but the year can already be described as a poor one in a department in which the Commonwealth has perenially been weak-the field events.
The 30th best mark in the High Jump last year was 6 feet 2%1⁄2 inches. This year 6 feet 1 inch is still good enough to rank in the first 30, while 22 feet 8 inches is good enough in the Long Jump as compared to 23 feet 0% inches which was the 30th mark last year.

SMITH
An angry Noel Coward, telephoned me last week and asked me to deny a newspaper report that he and Sir John Gielgud would be paid £2,000 for their day's filming in "Around The World In Eighty Days."
"We both gave our services free for two reasons," he continued. "First: Because the producer is a friend of ours;
"Second: Because we belleve he is filming in a system which is both superb and overpowering.
"If you really want to know,{ what
was involved, it' money
day's txx- was £100-for the penser."
L
Who is the producer, and what is the system which can get stars not only of the calibre of Coward and Gielgud, but also Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Howard, Eddie Fisher, Trevor Peter Ustinov, A. E. Matthews household and many more
"sup names, to tako virtually porting" roles in a new film?"
The man; Michael Todd. The alm: Todd-AO. The system:
