Doubles Need Plenty

Of Practice

Of the many fascinating positions which artse dur- ing a frame of snooker, that requiring the use of a double shot is one of the most spectacular. Because of this, i is a popular stroke with all smooker players—although, I'm afraid, many altempt it without fully understand-▾ ing It. Like all advanced strokes, it has to be thoroughly mastered and the correct approach made at the be ginning.

Talking about this very stroke the other evening my opponent said he knew what had to be done but never managed to put his theory into successful practice. He played the shot for me to see. As I expected, his execu- tion was at fault.

London, Mar. 8. Don Cockell, British Heavyweight Boxing Champion who meets Rocky Marciano for the world title in San Francisco in May, will be the first British boxer to fight for this title since Tommy Farr was narrowly outpointed by Joe Louis in 1937.

But for the last British boxer to hold the Heavy- weight Championship, one has to go back to 1899. Bob Fitzsimmons, of Cornwall, won the title in 1897 from "Gentleman" Jim Corbett and lost it two years later when knocked out by Jim Jeffries.
