Old Cornish Copper Mine Yielde Uranium Ore
THE CHINA MAIL, FRIDAY OCTOBER 1,
Wheal Edward Milne, on the edge of the cliffs at St Just, three miles from Land's End, Cornwall, England, may have a new lease of life as the result of work now being carried out by modern prospecters with geiger counters. For years the mine was worked for copper in the hey-day of Cornish mìning, but the financial structure of the old mineral companies made no provision for the time when underground exploration was necessary or when thinner, lodes were met and by 50 years ago most had closed, until today only two are working, both for tin.
Wheat Edward, however, attracted the attention of a prospecting geologist, Mr Richard Rumbold of London, who was surveying the whole af West Cornwall for radio-active material; combluing this work with the field testing of modern prospecting equipment. His reiger counter floked encouragingly when samples of øre were produced from the ancient mine and by scrambling down the cliff edge, he found a fairly easy means of access. Otherwise an elaborate winch gear would be needed to co down the vertical main shafts, which disappear dramatically Into the dark ground, Now is likely that a company will be formed to re-open the old mine for uranium ore.
This picture shows: Mr E. C. Murray and Mr Richard Rumbold texting the rock 120 feet down the old Wheal Edward Mine, for uranium, with a relger counter. – Express Photo,

London, Sept. 80.
British association with the European Iron and Steel Community is regarded here as a primarily political problem and steel leaders not prepared to express an opinion about it until they get a lead from Downing Street.

Six months ago the political lead, was clear; the British Government was not prepared to accept the principles of fusion and supranationalism on which the Community is based.
