The Brigadier And The Singer Plan To Raise A Championship Team

By MARY HEWAT

On the tenth tee at Stanmore Golf Club a square-built man wearing a yellow jersey put down his ball. He took an iron, stepped back, and drove on to the green.

He hit two more drives, both on the green. But he could not see them. He could not see the club he used, the sun on the fairway, or the flag. For 32-year-old Gerry Brereton is totally blind.

When he had hit the last ball, he picked up a white painted blind man's stick, feli his way off the tee, tapped over a wooden bridge and walked on to the green.

Ken Redford, the Stanmore Club professional, took Brereton's arm, guided Redford showed no surprise him to the first ball, and lined him up with the hole. when Brereton sank the putt. He is used to it.

Surrey, winners of the County Cricket Championship for the past two seasons, made certain today of at least sharing the title this season. Needing only four points to attain this position, they ran through Worcestershire and dismissed them for 25, the lowest county total of the senson and then passed that score to be certain of four points for a first innings lead, whatever else happens in the match.

Chief instrument in the dismissal of the Midlands side, who batted for only 103 minutes, was Tony Lock, the England left-arm spinner, who in 33 balls took five wickets for two runs.

I Blame Arsenal For Starting The Slide Attack-The Style We Must Build Again

West Bromwich Find That It Can Work

By Stande manke &

Team tactics have become the fetish of modern football. We hear of nothing else. Books have been written about them. Managers spend sleepless nights trying to work out new plans. I have known some write pages of notes during a game in an attempt to find ways and means of perfecting and improving team-work.

We hear of blackboards in the dressing-room and table games to perfect moves thought up by students of the game. We are all running round in circles trying to copy someone else's style because it was succesful. If a team wins the World Cup, the FA Cup, or the League championship you can bet that every other team will start a research squad on the job of finding a similar plan to the winning

one.

Some just graft on the winning plan. without any variation. They are all lock- ing for the secret of success.
