A sudden tropical storm formed very rapidly about 80 miles south of Hongkong early this morning but it is expected to pass to the west of Hongkong and the Royal Observatory has an- nounced it is therefore unlikely that sustained gales will occur in the Colony.
As a precaution, however, the No. 1 typhoon signal was hoisted at 9 a.m. this morning.
The Observatory statement said Hongkong can expect further rainfall from the south-east.
The Director of the Royal Observatory, Mr G. F. P. Heywood made the following statement at 11.30 am. today:
"Ships' reports received at 9 a.m. this morning say that a tropical storm had formed very rapidly with its centre about 80 miles to the south of Hongkong.
