In announcing Hutton's appointment, the MCC said that a “reassur- ing medical report" on Hutton has been received. It was added, In common with all other players chosen, he would be subject to a final medical examination before sailing on September 15.
The appointment settled a great deal of cöntroversy and speculation. The original appointment of the 38-year-old Hutton as England professional captain in 1952 broke all traditions.
