CONDITIONS
Oxford, May 6, Roger Bannister, lanky British athlete, today became the first - a feat many man in the world to run the mile in under four minutes doctors and sportsmen believed to be impossible.
The 24-year-old medical student collapsed and had to be helped off the track after clocking three minutes 69.4 seconds for the Amateur Athletics Association against Oxford University,
Bannister achieved the dream of every mile runner in conditions he himself described before the race as "stupid". A strong cross wind handicapped the
runners.
Bannister suggested after the race that a three-minute 56-second mile was a possible target for the future.
