30 Years Of Golf Teaching -Principles My Father Taught Me
By BERNARD HUNT
As I am only 24 it may seem strange that I should claim to be able to offer 25 years of golf teaching experience in this series of articles. But that is precisely my position; for whatever I write will really be the worldly wise experience of my father who has heen steering people through their golfing problems for nearly 30 years and who has taught me nearly everything I know.
I say "nearly" with a special point. For it has been one of my father's greatest principles that every golfer has to build his own game. The start must be a swing that is basically sound—it is vital to be able to bring the clubhead on to the ball with straight-bitting consistency—but after that every man has to work at the game himself.

H.K. FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR?
EVER before has there been so much public interest in Hongkong soccer than during the season now ending. And never before has the Colony boasted so many talented players -players who have given tens of thousands of soccer "fans" clever and thrilling exhibitions of their prowess in this greatest of all local field sports.
The China Mail has, therefore, decided to organise among the followers and supporters of local soccer a Gallup Poll to determine, by popular vote,
Hongkong's Footballer of the Year.
China Mall readers are cordially invited to fill in the form below, nominating whom they regard as the Colony's outstanding footballer of the current season.
The two qualifications for nomination are:
(1) Footballing prowess.

you know to make your hands stronger so that you can better control the clubs you swing. It may sound trite and simplo but therein lies the main key to beiter golf and greater enjoy- ment of a great game,
It is a sound plan to get your gulting muscles into tune. And i have found that some of the oldest exercises In the book are uest. Practise your pivot by the und metaod of putting your hunds
on your hips, bending torward, and then turning your trunk first to left and then uhrough to the right.
FITNESS ESSENTIAL
Then eat on your back and slowly raise und lower your legs. But there is no need or me to go on. You know just as many exercises as do for toning up the tummy muxles.
The main thing is
don't lunk it. You will be surprised how much you use those muscles every time you swing at a ball, And don't think because
you may have turned 40 you are too old to get a good pivot.
My father has always main- tained at any man who can walk can pivot. So practise it. Quile apart from your golf, it will do you good.

Some of greatest players swing flat reach hugh, swing slowly or sweep throug like un express train. But there is one point at winch they ail get together. And that point is where their hands assert full control of the club when the clubhead is about two feet from the ball-and
ing with the Arsenal footballers. The theory is that the atter you are the better you play.

Even so I believe that best exercise of all for golf is the swinging of a club. I often lumber up for a quarter of an bour by swinging three clubs together. It's surprising how cusy it is to control one after- wards.
I know several good amateurs who have made a short.weight- ed club only about two feet long-to that
have they can carry❘ reguler swinging practice at it through the actual strike of home without busting too many of the lights. This--indeed any the ball.
