Concluding the ADVENTURE of the ABBAS RUBY
WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR
While Sir John Doverton, the celebrated horticulturist, and his guests are in his conservatory investigating the theft of his prize camellias, the Abbas ruby disappears from the library. Andrew Joliffe, the butler, is arrested. He has been previously convicted as a Jowel thief and the empty case of the ruby is found under his mattress. After interviewing Sir John and Lady Doverton, Sherlock Holmes finds the dead camellias covered with snow out- sida a passage window. He and Watson go on to see Lady Doverton's brother, Captain Mosterman, who helped Jollife get the job, and who sold to Sir John after the theft: "I blame myself for not telling you his past history." They find him at, the Nonparoll Club, an excluaire gambling club, where he li secratury.
