Japan is suffering an embarrassment of riches in the midst of
poverty.
Locked in the Bank of Japan vaults is a treasure in diamonds. gold, platinum, silver and other precious metals and stones that would have inspired legends before these days of 10-digit government budgets. The government isn't sure what to do with the treasure. Unofficial suggestions that it be used to pay some Southeast Asian reparations claims against Japan bring nervous reactions from the Foreign Office.
