Yugoslavia Needs US Wheat

.

Washington, Jan. 25.

United States oficials said today Yugoslavia apparently I needed at least 400,000 tons of food wheat in addition to the 10,000 tons

seed of Spring wheat which the Administra- tion was sending to that country next month,

They explainca Yugoslavin needed this" wheat because of the severe drought in that coun→ try and presumably Yugoslavia would like to have it as a gift but the Administration was not empowered to do this unless a state of famine prevalled.

They Bald Yugoslavia could receive some wheat tinder section 550 of the Mutual Security Act by which Yugo- slavia

provide the would equivalent in local currency to be applied in a way agreed on by the Foreign Operations Administration.

They understood that "Yugo slavia feared that. the local currency might. · be applied to buying products for expórt so titht YugoslAVIN In this way might less valuable Toroig exchange.

However, that was not the intention of the POA and the locul

currency could be ap piled in much the same way. Dr' counterpart funds for publle works, munitions contracts and the like.

!

These officials pointed out that the FOA does not have an unlimited amount of dollars Available under section 850 of the Act but recognised Yugoslavia would need some to before June and the FDA how considering if it could send any with what funds are avail abla..

They added:
