TRUMAN ANSWERS ACCUSATIONS OF DISLOYALTY

Why White Remained In

Government Service

Kansas City, Nov. 16.

Former President Truman said tonight that Harry Dexter White was retained in Government service in spite of accusations of disloyalty against him because it was of great importance that an investigation involving many other persons should go forward.

Asserting that final responsibility for this decision was his, Mr Truman said in a prepared address broadcast and televised throughout the country that any unusual action with respect to Mr. White's appoint- ment might well have alerted all the persons involved to the fact that investigations were under way and thus endanger the success of the investigations."

Mr Truman's speech was in reply to a charge by the Attorney-General, Mr Herbert Brownell, that White, now dead, was retained in an important Government post in spite of reports that he was a Soviet spy.
