APPEAL COURT HEARING

Nine Prisoners Get Increased Sentences

None of the 23 prisoners who appealed to Mr Justice C. W. Reece in the Appeal Court this morning for reduction of sentences passed by Magistrates had any success. Instead nine of them had their sentences increased, and the re- maining 14 were told that the Magistrates' sen- tences would date from today.

Mr Justice Reece told many of the appellants that they had put forward absolutely no ground for a remission and he considered their appeals frivolous and a waste of the Court's time.

There was an 18-year-old youth with fed previous convictions who had his sentence of 12 months for returning from Danutement doubledi 1-year old who was rught twibe stealing from Shek och tenta whose 12- montti sentence was increased to 18 months; and a clerk who walked off with a $10,000 cheque entrusted to him by his manager was given an extra eight months to the ten montha imposed by a Magistrate.
