Let's go sailing over the land

HERE'S fun in movement. It may be that the excitement and high spirits that come from riding a bicycle or piloting a jet airliner depend on how much one has grown up; but I have found the charm of sailing has stayed with me from my earliest days.

RAF pilota, too, have told me that they enjoyed messing about with bonts far more than sitting at the controls of a plane.

All saily set, the home-made land yacht aptada over the fields at 15 to 20 miles an hour.

Some time ago I thought it would be. amusing to sail over the countryside of Dorset, and I built a land-yacht. 1.had only seen a picture of a

This rear cross piece, or axle, sand-yacht; and my design was about four feet across; the of a craft that would sail beam of the yacht was forward over the hills was very where the mast was stopped, much an experiment. But and the measure was 8ft. Gins. it worked!

The chassis, on which was to be built the body, hull, or fuselage, hedi to have enough beam to give sinbility because the pressure on walls would lond to lift the windward wheels.

built my chassis from lengths of stout ash, bolted to- gether with mogle imas. A

tabernacle had to be made to support a bamboo must. The chassis was supported on side car wheels rather like those used with a motor-cycle com- bination,

I managed the steering with a tiller fixed to the rear axle, and, the chands was suspended below It.

The yacht was sloop-rigged and enrried something like 200 square feet of canvas.

A strong nort-wester blowing on the day I first tried out the craft. I found it sailed very well indeed, but was rather under-canvassed.

It came to windward quite well; and skidded only slightly turt when I put on the damp the helm down to come about on the other tack.

One of the greatest thrille was going through a gateway with just inches to spore, and travelling at between 18 to 20 miles an hour.
