Though nothing was expected to emerge by way of positive com- mitments it was at least hoped that the Washington talks between the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr R. A. Butler, and United States Treasury officials would lift the veil of mystery that shrouds the Com monwealth 'plan' for Sterling.
That hope, however, has been sadly disappointed. For the joint communique issued after the talks was a masterpiece of official vague- ness, surpassing even that of the December Commonwealth Conference.
That some sort of plan exists for Sterling can no longer be doubled. Details of the Government's intentions are not known but there has been a good deal of speculation on the subject in the financial Press, and the ideas that have emerged are probably not far removed from the facts.
