AIRPLANE JUBILEE YEAR

NTIREE is the jubilee
year of the airplane. It was in 1903 (on December 17) that the American brothers, Wilbur and Or. ville Wright, made the first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
There will be celebrations in many countries.
That first flight lasted 12 seconds; the speed! about 30 m.p.h.

But the 50th year of the air- plane will see in fundumental changes from the 49th, which was notable chiefly for the in- troduction of jet-engined air- ners and the big Delta-winged bomber.
So far ul faster-than-gund flying has been chleved in power dives, but some experts belleve that before 1953 is over it will be done in level fight,

A lot of development work is being done with titanium, and experiments are going ahead with plastics.

The shirt, tie, vest, pants, and socks are as near creaseproof as possible and come up like new after n quick rinse.
The suiting, a mixture of Ardil—which is made from groundnuts-ruyon and nylon, will be available in the spring at half the price of worsted.
My New Year man's hard-wearing socks are of "crimped" nylon, which clings well to the leg. His wrinkleproof tie is made from Terylene, the all-British discovery. The lightweight summer shoes are of nylon mesh.
The vests and pants of nylon mesh, which are warmer in winter than they look, and braces of P.V.C. (poly-vinyl-chlorido) plastic, are already in the shops.
So are Terylene shirts, like the one here which has been washed three times but never ironed..
The fogs came- and the whole air was poisoned
THE
HE mysterious black fog which blanketed London some weeks ago was seven times more poisonous than any ordinary fog. It contained corrosive sulphur fumes in a strength never before recorded in London.
This fact has come to light during a special inves tigation which is still being carried out by the Health Ministry.
It helps to explain why nearly 3,000 people seem to have died as a result of the for and why London's hospitals were packed with patients suffering from chest ailments.
More than nine times as many people died from bron- chitis as in the previous fog- lets week.
