The Magic Of Xmas

THRISTMAS Atil comes;

whntover condition the world might be in, and as Dickens reminds us, there is magic in Christmas Day! No human disillusionment can quench its significance. It may have a facade of frivolity, sometimes hard, uncaring frivolity, marked | by the "feasting and the frolic and the fun" of pagan ideals that long preceded the festival of the Nativity. But, it has much more than this. It is at once a com- memoration and a symbol. Christmas day lifta the veil for a brief interval on the common humanity of men, womon and children, It challenges the introspective! to live objectively for a day. It coaxes the curmud. geon to think of others be side himself. It provokes the thrifty to relax their thrift for a while and to release their more generous impulses. Christmas tempts us to widen the bounds of goodwill. and neighbour

Drama And Heroism Marks Rescue The Season's

Of Shipwrecked Passengers

Beirut, Dec. 23,

Thirty-two-year-old American artist Langdon Harriss saved the life of the 10-year-old son of a French Embassy Counsellor in one of the heroic, nets enacted aboard the hulk of the liner Champollion.

Langdon Harriss of New York, who now lives in Paris, jumped overboard with the young son of Francoise Puaux today and made their way to safety.

The Princeton graduate was given treatment but was not suffering from any injuries.

One of the first persons to see Harriss, was the New York Times cor- respondent Michael Clark, who went down with Harriss on the Egyptian boat Zam Zam in 1941 when both were.serving with the British Ambulance Corps.

Harriss was one of 12 pligrims 36 hours as prisoners in the yards of the stricken ship, it to the Holy Land in a group ilner, stranded 200 yards off the overturned, tossing its crew into headed by Father Lechat.
