In 1853 he founded the firm Hanbury & Co., as from 1856 Crampton, Hanbury & Co.; this partnership was dissolved in September 1857,83 after which he established a new one, Bower, Hanbury & Co.
Made a considerable fortune through the sale of land in Hongkew. He was also a landowner in the French Concession where he tried to initiate the local "Halles", but in this he was unsuccessful (1864-1865).
