Living Language
Why we say Effete,
This strange word comes from two Latin words, ex meaning out of, and foetus menning what has been brought forth. The full Latin word of effetus meant weakened by child bearing. So
now "effate" means worn out or exhausted, · but is sometimes used to
mean old fashioned.
