River Moved Off The Map

Of Canada

Vancouver, Nov. 24,

A river nearly as big as the Thames has just been moved off the map in northern British Columbia to make a 950 square mille lake and provide: water power for the £200 millon partly British-financed alumi- nium smelter at Kilimat, on the Pacific coast.

For centuries the Nechako River fed off a chain of Intros, then joined the Fraser River. 184 miles from the Nechako

source.

Now a vast diversion tunnol, built to channel the river round the Kenney Ham, has been closed,

Watched by a handful of engineers, rubble was dumpod in it, then sluice gates were closed.

Thousands of trout walled for Heath in the shallows

The dam has changed, the watershed flow, from custta: west.

When the lake la fuit fhe waters will flow, down a 10-millo Junnel to a power-house built Inside ́a. mountain, at Kémába. Vertical shafts..and by-passos for the water, have been 'driifod down 2,000 feat through, tho. mountain.

From there the power will be carried, by a transmisalon Imo to Kitimiat, 50 miles away.
