NINE YEARS FOR MANSLAUGHTER

Sentence of nine years' hard labour was passed on Chung Wah, 26, former rattan worker, when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter before the Senior Puisne Judge, Mr. Justice E. H. Williams, in the Criminal Sessions this morning.

Chung who was charged with the murder of his elder brother's wife, Ho Ying, 26, in a hut at Mount Davis on the night of July 31-August 1 pleaded not guilty to the indictment but pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The plea was accepted by the Crown,

UNIQUE IN HISTORY OF HK COURTS

Legal history was made this morning when pleas of guilty to mur- der were accepted in two Courts at the Criminal Sessions and two men were sentenced to death by hanging within half an hour of each other.

The Senior Puisne Judge, Mr Justice Williams, remarked that this was unique in the annals of the Colony. The Court had recorded one plea of guilty to murder before and this was rare, but two pleas of guilty made it unique.

Mr Justice William allowed the accused, Hung Chuen, 29-year-old un. employed, an adjournment of five minutes to consult with his Counsel when he first pleaded guilty to a charge of murdering a woman, Ip Kwan-tai, in Tung Ping Lane, Kowloon Tsai Village on August 20.

The Judge asked Defence as did the instructing solleitor, Counsel Mr D. A. L. Wright the serious consequences of (Instructed by Mr C. Y.
