Off-ration Tea Slumps -Firms To Find Out Why

London, Nov. 9, +

A month's experience' of tea off the ration has shown such a sharp decline in sales that importers, blenders, and retailers are getting together to find the cause.

Just before rationing ended it was found that sales were higher than the average pré-war consumption; merchants made special efforts to maintain the rate.

But in most parts of the country retallers, with their shelves packed with tea priced from 3s. a 1 upwards, report lagging sales,

Last night a upekesman for Lyons said: "We bellove the reason is that most housewives were building up stocks, when the nation was generous.

Now supplies are enough

to meet almost any demand, but housewives are using up stocks instead of buying fresh cupplies. We belleve sales will pick up BACON LAGS

Many grocers who have also handled off- ration cooked gammon and hams, as well as the dearer five-ounce bacon to clear their ration, failed stocks as completely as at the end of previous rationing periods.

Biggest demand by familles taking their full rations has been for cheaper, streaky cuts, varying from 20. 4d. to 3s. 3d. a 1bine Food

Minister is to detailed reports bacon and ham sales. If these show Д national surplus, bacon may be taken off ration.

Or, it may be, more home- grown pigs could be sent to the fresh pork market with the object of building up meat sup ∙plics to an annual total of about

2,000,000 tons.

At this figure the Government believes it would be safe to abandon bulk buying and restore the meat trude to private hands.
