bassy, less than 250 yards from West Berlin's "frontier," where Nikolal Shvernik, Chairman of the Praesidium of the Suprtane Soviet, is staying.
He is in Berlin for tomorrow's third anniverary of the found- ing of the East German Re- public, to bo observet with masa porades and meetings.
Visitors to
the Soviet Em-. bassy were today searched and questioned before admission.
China and all the East European Communist countries have sent delegations. Western Allied officials expect

Western observers believed that M. Shvornik had come to Berlin either to conclude or propare: a Soviet-East German pact almilar to the Allied West German treaties.
Such a pact they thought, would tie East Germany stili closer to the Soviet-dominated East European bloc.
