NEW POLITICAL DRAMA IN US
Portland, Oregon, Sept. 21.
A spokesman for the Republican Vice- Presidential candidate, Senator Richard Nixon, said today that he expected to know "within 48 hours" whether he would remain in the election.
The spokesman was believed to be referring to an impending showdown between Senator Nixon and the Republican Presidential candidate, Mr Eisenhower, over the $18,000 fund received by Senator Nixon from the Californian friends for political expenses.
Members of Senator Nixon's staff admit that the fund will continue to be a campaign issue in the Pre- sidential election regardless of the merits of the case. Close associates said his conviction was that the donations were "honourable" and he had no intention of rosigning his candidature.
He has not spoken by telephone with Mr Eisenhower since the storm blew up.
