CAMPAIGN

TO SMASH BANDITRY

London, Sept. 15.

The Road Haulage, Executivo, faced with the same problem as the police chiefs trying to stop car-stealing, are planning to fit their fleet of 40,000 lorries with anti-theft gadgets.

Archibald Henderson, given a special road haulage ap pointment last March to smash lorry banditry, said: "Our chief engineer is working on three types of gadget—a method of locking the steering wheel, another of cutting out the Ignition, and some kind of term device, such as a loud noiso starting when a lorry is stolen,

"Wo have been considering the question of stopping thefts of parked lorries for some time.

"REPUBLIC MOTORS ITD. 360-Hennessy SIRUTA: 34992-

Locking the doors is no good at all. The thieves can eually open a door lock"

When Mr Henderson was ap-i pointed in March the number of Horry thefty reached a peak, They dropped in April, again in May, and have since remained atbut the same at the low figure. Sinco March about 68 | lorries have been stolen.

"One of our troubles in find- ing a suitable anti-thief gadget as it must not be similar. On overy lorry sald Mr Honder

son.

"Our chief engineer is work- Ing on one idea in which the gadget would depend, on Q: imental key carried by cach lorry driver in his hend and |which nobody else would have, It is on the same lines as the combination of a safe lock.”
