Master horologist's dream is realized- 104 years after
his death
BRAM-LOUIS PERRELET, of Lo Locle, In Switzerland, was born To 1729 and died in 1826. He was a watch- maker. A great watchmaker. And, greatest of his achievements, perhaps, was the in- vention of a self-winding watchi. This pedo- meter, or Jerkwinding pocket-wateli, in- spired mes like Breguet and Recordon to emuinte him, and set the direction of research; into the self-winding principle for the next hundred years.
Apkal pedometer watch, Inspired by Abres-Louis Perrelet's prototype. None of the watches made by him has survived,
But Perrelet's pocket-watch, though it wound itself, was not the Gnal answer. The constant jerking told hard on the mech- anfum, and although perfect in theory, in practice the jerkwinder's shortcomings doomed it to failure from the start.
Different applications of the principle were used; different, often fantastic, types of watch made their appearance. But for two centuries after Perrelet's birth, no one had bettered his achievement; no one hud produced really practical self-winding watch

The Rolex Rator, as the new self- winding mechanium was called, was patented In 1933, and answered all the demands made upon it. Bero at last was the true self- winding watch: the Oyster Perpetual.
Twenty years of testing, both in labora todes and in real life, have fully established the reputation of the Oyster Perpetont. The Oyster Perpetual can truly be said to have opened up new horizons in the whole of the watchmaking world.
