The Gathering is a brilliant spec-1.5 tacle which attracts visitors from many parts of the world, to watch the superb programme of solo piping, massed pipe bands, dancing, and athletics, and the arrival of the Royal Party from Balmoral. This year Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is expected to attend the Gathering. The honour of royal natronage was first conferred by Queen Victoria in 1848 when she first watched the sports at Braemar, and it has been continued by four successive monarchs.
