Support for a status quo armistice in Koren
is revealed by Mr Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations, in his annual report to the General Assembly published today.
He wrote: "If an armistice should be con- cluded in Korea on the basis of approximately the present battle line, available evidence indicates that public opinion in the majority of member states would welcome it with enthusiasm, and much of the present anxiety, and disillusionment would disappear."
Such a development would strengthen public confidence in the United Nations as an instrument of collective security in general, he said.
Mr Lie admitted that the protracted armistice negotiations had given rise to "impatience, resentment and doubt."
