The Season's Prospects Are Brighter Than Ever

Says TOM FINNEY

So now we ara to have a Brighter Football campaign. The new "season opens with a chorus of warnings that we-players, officials and managers—must produce a new and attractive brand of Saccer-OF perish.

I have never disagreed with anything more. I know that football attendances. last season averaged only 19,525 per League' match. In 1948-19 that figure was 22,028. That is equivalent to more than 1,100,000 fewer spectators in a full scason. Moreover, I am well aware of the fact that the minimum gato money has now gone up to is. 9d.-3d, more than last August, But does that mean a crisis? No. Our English football now, I feel, has almost climbed back to the pinnacle on which It stood in the years immediately prior to the war.

As evidence, I would call sides like Manchester United and Tottenham. Foremost side_in 1939 was probably Wolves, Cup Finalists that season und runners-up in the Firat Division successive occasions.

If 24 months makes so great a difference to a footballer, what did six years do? But now we are getting over that period, and soccer is on the mend..
