CONSERVING RESOURCES

The Douglas Steamship. Company Ltd has decided to cease trading and to conserve the Com- pany's resources, it was announced at the annual. meeting of the Company this morning.

A statement by the Chairman of the Company, Mr J. R. Mullion, said that until February, 1951, trading results with chartered tonninge showed a small improve- ment as compared with the previous year. Then the trading position deteriorated considerably as the volume of trade declined steadily along the shipping routes your Company served, and at the same time rates of charter hire increased to unprecedented levels. Your General Managers therefore decided to cease trading and to con- serve the Company's resources, regarding it as no longer economic to continue to operate chartered tonnage.

The phrase means to keep a close and con tinuous guard over something. In military Language 趄 "watch"
