JOLLY ROGER MAY

ON TOO LONG TO HIS POWERFUL FINISH

By

"RECORDER”.

The generally accepted favourites for the two middle distance championships in the Olympic track events are Malvin Whitfield of the United States in the 800 Metres and Roger Bannister of Great Britain, in the 1,500 Metres.

Whitfield is almost a certainty to win as Jamaican Arthur Wint, his closest rival, has been nursing himself over the past few months with muscle trouble. If Wint is sufficiently recovered, there may yet be a race of it.

As for Bannister, he too has been nursing himself and keeping out of strenuous competition. It remains to be seen how effective his famous "powerful finish" will be against experienced rivals whose knowledge of the tactics of the race are superior to his.
