Living Language

Why we say "All my eye and Betty Martin." The story goes that a British sailor 'in' an Italian church over-

heard a beggar pray- ing: "Ah mihi, bente Martine" which means: "Ah, help me, Blessed „St. Martin." But the sailor thought he was saying "all my eye and Betty Martin" which is what he told his ship- mates later. It sounded nonsense to them and thus the saying got its meaning. Some support for the story lies in the fact that St Martin is the patron of Italian beggars.

Appeals Against Court Decision

An appeal against dismissal of an application of the occupiers of premises known as the Lucky Bakery, situated on a valuable site in Kow-to loon, was brought before Mr Justice Reece at the Supreme Court this. morning.

Appellant was Wong Yuk-yip, woman owner of the premises, and she was represented by Mr Brook A. Bernacchi, instructed by Mr Y. H. Chan. :

Respondent was Leung King-pang, trading as the Lucky Bakery, Sung Chi- kong and all other occupiers of 96, Nathan Road, ground floor. They were repre- sented by Mr D. A. L. Wright, on the instructions of Mr J. M. d'Almada Remedios.
