THE SHOT FROM A BUNKER IS AS SIMPLE AS ANY OTHER SHOT IN THE GAME
Says MAX FAULKNER
The shot from a bunker, which seems to terrify the average hand- icap, golfer, is as simple as any other shot in the game. That is not an exaggeration. Many professionals will tell you they would prefer' to play a delicate approach to the pin from sand than from some of the "tight" lien one so frequently finds. They will guarantee to put it dead. In fact, the American boys aim for the hole.
Now that is not boasting. Any sensible amateur can master this shot. There is a simple technique for doing it and there is no need to be afraid of it. want you to believe that, for it is absolutely true.
I
The fear of getting in a bunker is one of the things which holds back a great many otherwise good golfers. Their approach play falls apart because they get the iden "I mustn't get into that bunker" and proceed to play the most ridiculous, half- hearted, safety-first shot imaginable.
Here and now I must tell you that unless you conquer that fear and learn to play boldly for the pin, you will never play good golf or get good Bgures.
1
is because of this fear that you never even see an amateur practise from a bunker. It may be, of course, that too few know how to go about the shot; so let us remedy that.

I am assuming, of course, that you have the niblick needed for the job. Generally speaking, for soft deep seaside sand the bread soled wedge-type is best. For the harder, heavier and firmer clay-like sand inland the nibilek with the slightly narrower sole is the better club.

Not since the titanic battles between Bruce Woodcock and Freddie Mills has a fight between two Britons caused such interest.
There is more at stake than the British title. The winner will earn the right to fight Joey Maxim, of America, for his world cruiserweight crown, in London later this summer.
Maxim, however, must retain the title in his fight against Sugar Ray Robinson.
However, the effort appeared to sap some of his strength, for Tontini, not a heavy puncher, nearly knocked "Coekell out in the second round.

BOTH 'WARMED-UP'
For their White City contest. both Turpin and Cockell have had preliminary
warmkig lights.
Turpin fought the French Cruiserweight Champion Jacques Halrabedion, and disposed of him with the minimum amount of trouble, and the maximum of efficiency.
The third round was
still young when he crashed home vicious right to complete the work started by his left, and Halrabedian,, bruised, battered and bleeding, sank to the canvas. Cockell fought Renato Tontin
the
Italian Champion. There was much speculation about whether he' would make the weight for the fight, which was

For the Turpin fight he has to shed another two pounds. It in essential that he does it without impairing his strength further, for to enter the ring against Turpin without being 100 percent at might well prove disastrous, More than any boxer in the world, Turpin punches his weight. And if a boxer of 11 stone puts his full weight be hind a blow, and times it powerful correctly, it is more
dellvered than one. incorrectly by a man who may be two or three stones beavier.
A good middleweight is a good boxer. At 119 lb he can move with the speed and agility of the lighter men, and produce the power of the heavies. Many middies have fought with dis- tinction in the heavler divisions. Mickey Walker, the American, twice came within an ace of winning the cruiserweight title..
British Tennis Goes On Trial On June 13 & 14
London.
On-June-13 und 14 British tennis will be on trial,--At Bologna, the men tacklé Italy in the third round of the Davis Cup. The women stay at home to meet the United States in the Wightman Cup.
Neither of these matches may result in a British victory, but they will give an indication as to the extent of the progress made by the younger players..
The advance of such promising youngsters es Roger Breker and Susan Partridge, Who will both be playing in these events, has created a new wave of optimism amongst en- thusiasts in this courkry.
There are hopes that the time is not too for distant when Britain will end the Australian monopoly In the international Acid.
The second week-end In June will show how far this, cp- timism is justified.
UP TO THE OLD FIRM
Despite Becker's recent rapid improvement, however, it seems likely that it will be left to the cd rm of Mottram and Puish to carry the flag for Britain.
In some ways this unfor- tunate. Beeker is u player of real promise who, with the cor- rect handling, could reach world class. He is always anxious to learn by playing against men of greater experience.
But he is only likely to get a chance to play in the actual tie if the issue has been settled one way or the other after the first three or four mintches. If the gocs the full distance, his appearance will be limited to exhibition games.

With the standard of heavy- weight boxing as it is, Turpin appears to have as good a chance of emulating his example..
There is now a rule in interna- tional boxing that prohibits a fighter from holding more than one title at once. Sugar Ray Robinson had to relinquish his welterweight title whon ho moved into the 1ist üb. division, and if he beats Maxim he, will lose his middleweight title.
Similarly, victory for Turpin at the White City would gain him one title and lose him "on- other,
