So much publicity has been given to the ending of the post-war boom in textiles, and the distress this has caused to the cotton industries of the world, that the underlying causes of the present slump have tended to become obscured.

As far as Lancashire is concerned, however, some of these present even greater problems than the immediate difficulties created by the sud- den deterioration in demand for cotton goods and the consequent accumulation of stocks.
