THE COUNTY CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP

THE CHINA MAIL; THURSDAY, MAY 15, 1952.

LANCASHIRE, GLAMORGAN AND MIDDLESEX SHOULD FINISH NEAR THE TOP

Says PETER DITTON

Last week I discussed the county prospects for the coming season, mentioning Warwickshire, Yorkshire and Northants. This week I pro- pose to deal with thrée more counties which I expect to see somewhere near the top of the table at the season's end.

My selections are Lancashire, Glamorgan and--cautiously--Middlesex. "cautiously" for Middlesex have the Compton knee to contend with.

I say

Compton himself declares he is perfectly fit. And last season he was cer tainly in better form. But he is always liable to another breakdown following any quick twist or sudden jar, and a Middlesex without Compton is, in the words of the song, "Like a ship without a sail,"

By JOHN GRAYDON

Denis Compton is known as "The Cavalier of Lord's." With his gay spirit of adventure, desire to get runs quickly and as attractively as possible, his good looks, charm and personality, Denis has given cricket a terrific fillip since the war.

In every way he is recognised as one of Britain's greatest of sporting ambas- sadors. Compton, too, is a most agreeable young man. On and off the field he has a ready smile. Small boys who wait for hours to get the great batsman's autograph are usually rewarded with a grin, a pat on the head, and a word from Denis as he places his signature in their book.

Yes, Denis Compton is in every way a ericket character and it is hard to realise there have been occasions when the young man who has played cricket and soccer for England has worn a worried look for the simple reason nothing would go right for him at the wicket.
