PREDICTION BY LORD WILMOT
New York, May 7.
GRAVE SHORTAGE OF
U.S.
DOLLARS
Rio de Janeiro, 'May 7.
Brazil is faced with a serious dollar shortage and the resulting economic difficulties may last two or three years, authoritative financial circles warned today.
With a crisis already apparently under way, Brazil's essential imports will be affected and there will not be even enough petroleum to run the nation's industries and vehicles, financial authorities said..
Newspapers, 100, pointed out the gravity of the situation, saying that it will be felt by every Brazilian and calls for severe measures. The main factors in the situation were outlined as follows:
FOREIGN
1. Brazil's net dollar balance for 1952 is expected to average around $40,000,000 a month.
2. Due to drought In Argentina, Brazil must buy wheat in the United States at an estimated

is the end of the year visualised here today by former Wilmol. Lord British Minister of Supply.
The continued success of the Sterling Area measures to wipe out the dollar gold defteit should make possible a free Pound for trade purpost, he said, though it would not include the freeing of capital. And there would not be another devaluation, he con- tinued.
The recent greater austerity In Britain, and her decision to con- centrate with regard to dollar and heavy exports-on metals industry were showing results already.

petroleum. Despite a 15 per
cent annual increase in consump tion, it has set its present quota at last year's attoto, or around $15,000,000 monthly.
4. That leaves only $7,000,000 to take care of everything nise: machinery, farm equipment, in- dustrial expansion, Government services, essential druge and medicines. Obviously, it is not sumelent.
Although the Government did not raise the petroleum import 028-8/10 quota, still it has not been able to get enough dollar exchange to keep up with last year's.

Because
of the shortage, the Government has ordered bakers to mix wheat
flour with rice and monice flour,
The
huge amount of dollar exchange required for petroleum imports is the crux of the whole problem and it is generally admitted that unless rationing is menns found adopted, or some for increasing imports, many in- dustries will be hurt, plants forced to step or cut production, with consequent unemployment,
The most likely solution will be to enl down petrol for private use, allowing more exchange for petrol fuel oils and hviation which is alto vital as the nation depends largely on air trave).--- United Press.
