Puts Party In Dilemma
New York, Apr. 17.
The withdrawal of the Governor of Illinois,' Mr. Adlai Stevenson, from the presidential raçe has precipitated a weiter of conflicting opinions about the man on whon the Democrats would now pin their hopes.
There is no doubt that the Party chieftains had been grooming Mr Stevenson as heir apparent to President Truman. Also, those knowing him well say that for both political and personal rep- sons his decision is irrevocable.
That leaves three candidates A possibilities. They are:
Mr W. Aversli Harrima3, Mutual Security Director, whose chances can be better assessed after tonight's dinner of the Democrats of New York State. If he says the word (and there is no indication that he would refuse the nomination) and if the powerful New York "borses" of the Party give the signal,
there is nothing to pre vent a tremendous surge of or" Hanisation and popular support for Mr Harriman,
and at the convention would switch their votes if the word was given.
