Congress, determined to whack large chunks from the Administra tion's proposed $7,900 million foreign aid programme, today called the Secretary of State, Mr-Dean Acheson, to testify next Thursday.
Mr Acheson, along with the Mutual Security Administrator, Mr W. Averell Harriman, and the Defence Secretary, Mr Robert Lovett, will defend the entire amount before a joint meeting of the three House and Senate committees.
Despite two urgent appeals by President Truman yesterday for a full programme Congress appeared set on cuts of $1,000 million of more and is likely to tie some strings to the money to force the European allies to pull together on rearmament.
