HONGKONG GIRLS

KOWLOON RECORDS AS TEETH

CHATTER

By "RECORDER"

The first ever Hongkong v: Kowloon athletic meet in history was held at Boundary Street yesterday in very wintry conditions and on a track made heavy by recent rain. The chattering teeth ranged from those of Alexander Ajayi Alapini of Lagos, Nigeria, who said it was the coldest day he had ever known, to Deborah Hurlbatt's.

Deborah was all shivers throughout the afternoon, except for the few minutes when she was turning in two of the most remarkable leaps in local history. The better of the two 14 feet 11 inches was the third best ever in Hongkong.

If Debbie was okler than 13%, her two leaps would not have been very re- markable. At 13 they may well be the best ever done at that age. The Inter- national Association of Track and Field Statisticians will soon be getting down to checking that up.

More remarkable was the fact | record he had broken last week, that Deborah's best competitive by quite a comfortable margin leap up to yesterday was short in 54.7 seconds,

of 13 feet, though she came near to 14 in a jump in January

at Caroline Hill when she leap

of the take-off well short

d board.

On her first leap Deborah went out to 14 feet 9 inches, on her second to feet 11 inches and on her third to 14 feet 2 inches. The next best in an all-star field was an effort of 13 feet. 714 inches by The So- yang and Peng Sik, the later of whom cleared 14 feet 91⁄2 inches; for second place at last year's Colony Championships.

On her third leap Deborah get yather Be up-tying to renean- ber everything she was told is to in D pre-jump rehin session and Innded on the wrong foot. If the indut drapped that down too fast, she would have sailed well over 15 ferit.

Her best effort of 14 feet 11

inches yesterday represents: .

(1) One of the best leaps ever, if not the best, by a 13- year-old girl;

(2) The third best leap, by a feminine athlete in the past 12 months-in-Southeast-Asia;-

(3) The third best leap by air in Hongkong's athletic history: It. was three-quarters bacuming the of an inch short of official Colony record;

(4) The best long jump ever reroided in Kowloos, benting the 14 feet 7 inches by J. Marsland of KGVS in 1959;

This was a near blanket finish in 'the 100 Yards Dash at yesterday's athletic meeting between Hongkong and Kowloon at Boundary Street, though the time-keepers caught Lam Kąk-lan (second from left) four-tenths of a second ahead of Wong Yee-man (third from left) in second place.

From the left, the runners are Jennifer Hart, Lam Kak-lan, Wong Yee- man, Poon Ching-woon and Julia Tingay.

This was a runaway for Stephen Xavier (extreme left), the Colony re- cord holder in the 100 and 200 Metres, as he won the 220 Yards from Sgt. Ham- zah of the Royal Air Force.

From the left, the runners are Xavier, Hamzah. Lt. Shelley, F/Lt. R Roach, A. A. Alapini and Shek Ka-lim.-China Mail Photo,
