HONGKONG MOURNS KING GEORGE VI

Memorial Services & Two Minutes' Silence

HIGH TRIBUTES

PAID TO

LATE MONARCH

Hongkong this morning paid its tribute to the memory of the late King George VI with an impressive two minutes' silence at noon, during which time traffic everywhere on both sides of the harbour came to a halt, and work in offices stopped.

Special memorial services at St John's Cathedral, the Catholic Cathedral, St Andrew's Church, Christ-Church and the Union Church, were attended by thousands. At both cathedrals there were overflow congregations, who stood reverently outside and followed the services by means of amplifiers which had been installed for the occasion.

Flags everywhere remained at half-mast, and during the morning guns boomed a salute of 56 rounds at minute intervals.

Troops stationed in the Colony held their own memorial parades at Victoria Barrack, Whitfield Burracks and in the New Territories.
