United States and British officials in recent days! have held informal discussions on how to resolve the Anglo-Egyptian dispute and secure Egyptian participation in the proposed Middle East defence! command. They hope to be able to come up with some overall formula to be presented for con- sideration by President Truman and Mr Winston Churchill when the later arrives in Washington.
This was reported by authoritative sources, who said one American suggestion in the informal talks has been that Britain recognise King Farouk as ruler of the Sudan pending a plebiscite in which the Sudanese would determine their own future. The American hope is that the Egyptians. who themselves suggested the plebiscite, would then be willing to accept in principle: Egyptian adherence to the Middle East pact.
