Contemporary Home Features "Room Unit"

By JOAN O'SULLIVAN

GOOD cook knows

recipes, each featuring the same basic ingredient and the results will be two widely different dishes.

That's the idea behind the "room unit" houses describ- ed in "Contemporary Homes," a booklet published by the University of Illinois.

Today's house, taken from this publication, shows how the idea works, Each house described in the book is made up of four "rrom units." Each house fen- tures the same main unit living-dining ---8

area. When other room units are added to each, the finished houses are completely dif ferent in design.

colour

A simple rule satisfactory needs a dark, a light and a bright colour, the latter to be used only in small doses as an accent, unless the room is un- usually spacious. First to sider are the walls and floor coverings, because they are the largest areas of colour.

When doing a bedroom, the

f

effect should be soothing, regi- ful. rather than brilliant or stimulating. For example, decorate room with walls of tored green, very light green

the rug, with draperies and bed-spreads of white with print of various greens and just a touch of cherry red used for upholstery an a small slipper chair of tufted satin,

THIS IS ONE of the "room unit" houses described in "Contemporary Homes," a book which is published by the University of Illinois. By using a flat roof on the house as well as on the garage, a feeling of harmony is achieved. Note the U-shape of the front of the house.

THE REAR view of the house above shows how indoors and outdoors have been linked through the glass wall of the living room, which provides a delightful view of the spacious terrace and the garden urea.

Vegetables Can Be Kept

Fresh For A Year

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

American scientists are Experimenting with a new chemical spray that may keep vegetables fresh for a vear or more, the farm magazine Country Gentle- man reports.

The spray is called maleic hydrazide" (MH),

Successful

Horticulturists at Michigan S'ato College (East Lansing, Michigan) have made successful tests with the spray on onions, potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, and rutabagas. It will taite an- cther year, however, before conclusive evidence is obtained as to the lasting effects of the chemical, according to the US. Lepartment of agriculture. The chemical is currently being manufactured for experimental purposes only.

Malele hydrazide is sprayed CA the tuber crops several weeks before harvest time. The treatment arrests growth of the plants, but does not affect the crop yield. When the crops are harvested and stored there is no sprouting-a condition that clien Causes spoilage. Danger of spoilage from heat generated by stored vegetables also is stopped by use of MH. It slows respiration within the plant itself and lowers the tempera- ture.

Flavour Unchanged

Every living process in the but plants is slowed down, flavour and firmness of the vegetables Art retained. The crops used in the Michigan State College experiments were caten after being stored for a year, and no change in flavour or odour was noted. Cooking quality Was found to be superior to that of untreated

vegetables.

sugar beet gowers are especially interested In the chemical spray, since it been found that beets do Jose mtich sugar after being treated with MH and tored. Treated beets lost less than one percent of their total untreated sugar content, while beets lost more than 13 percent. MH also is being tested on sweet corn and peas. Both lose their quanty quickly after harvesting, and require rapid handling by packers. Scientists believe MH

Down Tooth

Decay

By H. N. BUNDESEN, M.D.

THE role of fluorine in pre- venting tooth decay, discoverbi a few yeɛrs ago, has been con- irmed.

Some of these invesilgations were made in communities where this substance cecurs naturally in the drinking water. Thesa findings were so impressive that In 1943 it was decided to Bee what could be accomplished by adding fluorine to the water supply.
