fucilities. or Since large parts of the areas being mined are within the Waterworks catchment area, the danger to health by pollution of the Colony's water supplics very great
Moreover the unlicensed miners have been honeycombing the bills with emall irregular diggings, varying from shallow trenches to deep pot-holes in the earth. Each miner, or group of miners has "staked out a claim" St) to speak and has started digging without regard to

I consideration but the extraction of ore. Not only is there danger of serious accident and risk loss of life to the miners them- selves, but the unplanned and chaotic development is causing grave damage to the surface of the land which will, nol stopped, result in soil erosion and the silting of water supplies. Preliminary steps taken by Government to regulate mining have been announced during, the past few weeks, viz the setting up of a small Mines Unit within the Labour Department and the appointment of a Superintendent of Mines and, more recently, the granting of short-term icences approved persons giving mining rights in the New Territories, until such time as comprehensive
mining new legislation has been prepared and proper mining leases have been dra

Why we say. Hearse...
The Latin word for a harrow was "hirpės”, and the word "herse" was coined to describe the atticed framework, very. like a harrow to look at, which was formerly placed over a coffin as r stand for candles. From this "hearse" came to mean the coffin itself, and later still the funeral car in which the coffin was carried. We now only use "hearse" in the last sense.
