Roy Campanella, Brooklyn's brilliant catcher, today was named most valuable player in the National League for 1951 by a 24-man Committee of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
It was the third time in the last 13 years that the writers have strayed from a National League pennant winner to pick the most valuable player. Although the Dodgers blew a 18% game lead and lost the flag to the New York Glants in a playoff, Campanella drew 11 of 24 first place votes.
Cordell, Aston Villa's goalkeeper, watches his right-back, Parkes, makes a save after he had missed the ball. Seen running in are Harmer of Spure (left), Moss of Aston Villa and Duquemin of Spurs (right). Spurs won 2-0.
